LAST MINUTE: Election results in Turkmenistan have been announced

The results of the early presidential elections held in Turkmenistan on 12 March were announced. In the statement made by the Central Elections and Referendums Commission, it was stated that the elections took place in a holiday environment, and 97.17 percent of the total 3 million 460 thousand 80 registered voters cast their votes on the election day. In the statement, “In accordance with Article 76 of Turkmenistan’s election law and on the basis of the decision of the Central Election Commission on March 14, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet Council Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who received 72.97 percent of the vote, was recognized as the new elected President of Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan State Institute of Physical Education and Sports Deputy Rector Hıdır Nunnayev came in second with 11.09 percent of the vote, while Deputy Governor of Marv Agadjan Bekmuradov came in third with 7.22 percent of the votes.

SERDAR BERDIMUHAMMEDOV

 

Serdar Berdimuhamedov, 41, son of President Berdimuhamedov, graduated from Turkmenistan Agricultural University in 2001.

Serdar Berdimuhammedov, who started his career as the Chief Specialist in the Foreign Economic Relations Office of the state Food Association, worked at Turkmenistan’s Moscow Embassy and his country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Switzerland at different times after his father was elected president in 2007. Later, Serdar Berdimuhammedov worked as a manager in different departments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. In 2016, he was elected as a parliamentary deputy from the Democracy Party and served as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Governor of the Ahal region.

Appointed to the Ministry of Industry of Turkmenistan in 2020, Serdar Berdimuhammedov has been serving as Deputy Prime Minister since February 2021. Berdimuhamedov was nominated for the presidency at the Extraordinary Meeting of the Democracy Party held on February 14.
